Key West
Key West: a key to life
Key West is the southernmost point in the continental US and
is actually closer to Havana, Cuba than Miami. This small island
has a rich and varied history. Key West has an independent and
free-spirit as demonstrated in its 1982 symbolic secession from
the Union, when it dubbed itself as the Conch Republic. This
unique spirit is perhaps why so many artists and writers have
made Key West their home at various times including Ernest Hemingway,
Tennessee Williams, and Robert Frost.
At one point during the late 1800s, Key West was the wealthiest
city, per capita, in the nation. Today it is a laid-back community
with an eclectic mix of residents that has more of a Caribbean
atmosphere than that of an American city.
Key West continues the theme of the other keys for being a
fantastic water sports playground, but it is perhaps better
known for its eccentricity, night life, lovely Key West architecture,
and historical landmarks.
Key West is reputed to have the most gorgeous sunsets and the
best place to see them is at Mallory Square Dock overlooking
Key West harbor. The event is celebrated with performances from
many street entertainers including mimes, fire jugglers, sword
sallower, and acrobats.
Drug Situation
South Florida, specifically Miami-Dade and Broward counties,
are still favorite areas of drug traffickers for the smuggling
of large quantities of cocaine, heroin and marijuana into the
continental United States (CONUS) from South America, Central
America and the Caribbean.
MDMA
Florida leads the nation in MDMA seizures. Among every part
of Florida, Southernmost area has been identified as a primary
gateway for MDMA smuggling into the Continental United States
(CONUS). The Miami Field Division (MFD) plans to target specific
enforcement initiatives towards the identification and dismantling
of illicit drug groups operating in Florida, with emphasis on
South Florida cities, like Key West. MDMA continues to be widely
available and used in the club scene in South Florida and similar
condition is in Key West also.
Heroin
Miami International Airport (MIA) is a major entry point for
South American heroin into the United States. This gateway has
give rise to the extensive consumption of heroin in Key West.
Presently the overwhelming majority of South American heroin
enters the CONUS via MIA. Couriers on commercial flights are
the primary methods through South American heroin are smuggled
into Key West.
Cocaine
South American trafficking organizations dominate the importation
and distribution of cocaine in Florida and Key West also receives
its quota from the similar gateway.
Methamphetamine
Mexican-produced crystal methamphetamine is distributed in Key
West via California. Whole Florida is known for its high quality
Mexican produced Methamphetamine.
Drugs Effects
High doses and long-term usage of every illicit drug may result
in violent behavior, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia. They
also can display a number of psychotic features, including paranoia,
auditory hallucinations, mood disturbances, and delusions, making
the user insane.
